In 2016, retirement villages emerged as one of the most talked about niche sectors in the health and social care market. Indeed, as rising staffing costs, modest fee increases and an unforgiving regulatory environment hit the local-authority facing care market, investor interest in housing-with-care increased steadily throughout the year.
Given the combination of an ageing population and a society where most of the housing equity sits with the over-65s, the potential for a model of care that has been hugely successful in overseas markets such as New Zealand, Australia and the United States to take root is substantial.
On 2 March, HealthInvestor partnered with leading law firm Trowers & Hamlins to consider the investment opportunities in housing-with-care to bring together sector experts, operators and investors active in the retirement villages market.
